Zero-click search is when someone gets their answer directly on the search results page — from an AI Overview, a featured snippet, or a knowledge panel — and never clicks through to any website.
The phrase sounds technical, but the shift behind it is simple and it affects every business that relies on being found online: more and more, people get what they need without ever visiting a site.

What is a zero-click search?
It’s a search that ends on the results page. Instead of clicking a link and landing on a website, the person reads the answer Google (or an AI tool) shows them and moves on. That answer might come from an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, a “People Also Ask” box, or a direct answer box. The common thread: the question gets resolved before a click is needed.
How big is zero-click in 2026?
Big, and growing. In 2026, research puts roughly two-thirds of Google searches — about 64% to 68% — ending without a click, up from around 50% in 2019. And when an AI Overview shows up, the zero-click rate climbs to about 83%. Answer engines like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity push it higher still. The exact number depends on who’s counting, but every serious study points the same way: the click is becoming the exception, not the rule.
Why zero-click matters for your business
Because the goal is quietly moving from getting the click to being in the answer.
For years, success online meant traffic — get someone to click through to your site. Zero-click search breaks that assumption. If a buyer asks “who’s a reliable electrician near me?” and the AI answers with two names right there, the winner isn’t whoever ranked #3 on a list nobody scrolled to. It’s whoever got named in the answer — even if the buyer never clicks.
That cuts both ways. If you’re not named, you can lose visibility you used to earn from ranking. If you are named, you gain something arguably more valuable than a click: the credibility of being the business the AI recommended. This is the same dynamic behind answer engines and why some businesses show up in AI answers while others don’t.
What to do about it
Stop optimizing only for the click, and start making sure you’re the business the answer names. Practically, that’s the same foundation good AEO is built on:
- Clean, crawlable pages an AI can actually read.
- Consistent business facts — name, services, area, hours — everywhere.
- Direct answers to the exact questions buyers ask.
- Visible proof — reviews, credentials, results — that gives the AI reason to trust you.
An honest word
No one can guarantee you’ll be named in the answer, and you should walk away from anyone who promises it. What you can do is remove every reason to be left out. Our scan checks 59 AI-visibility signals and runs buyer-intent questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Grok so you can see where you stand — and if you want to compare the tools that promise to help, our honest roundup lays them out with real prices.
